The Politics of Fashion

The Politics of Fashion

To be Chic without trying to hard!
Chic is a French word which means…………. Being Chic requires little to no effort.  Being able to whip up and outfit within in seconds.  As day-wear couturier Cristobal Balenciaga (1895-1972) said “elimination is the secret of chic” I basically interpret that as saying “less is more”. I often see ladies over accessorising and resembling a Christmas tree with too much tinsel. Stick to basics and try something like the monochrome trend or the minimalist trend. For example, I have an all-white summer collection, so the entire year I will collect white pieces to wear in summer, there’s just something refreshing about wearing white in summer and the way it brings out your tan and complexion. Don’t just stick to one shade of white; try creams, dry whites, and ivory.

Find fashion in the most unexpected places.
There is an assumption that fashion is associated with money or that fashion criteria is based on wearing the latest fashions from top fashion houses. Fashion is art, fashion is in the streets. Fashion is the student in Observatory. Fashion is the person who chooses to look different. Have you ever just sat in a coffee shop and just watched people walk by?  Society, the media and even our peers, irrespective of age, can make us feel so inferior for not having certain name brands of clothing and shoes. As soon as you blend in in with the mainstream, you are no longer in fashion. Wear clothing you like, that makes you feel comfortable, not because it is a prerequisite of our robot world. So I would like to banish the notion that looking good should NOT cost you an arm and leg.

Credit isn’t cool.
A big reality is that a large portion of young South Africans have too much credit, at such a premature age. They find themselves paying off several accounts. The truth is that they will pay 3 times as much for a pair of boots, then they would have if they paid cash. So yes you look fabulous in those boots but you are going to spend the next six months paying it off, and even before the time you finished paying it off, there will be something hotter and newer on the shelves. CASH IS KING. Who wants too much credit before you have even before you haven invested in the more important things in life. Like self-development, buying a house or a car, or starting a business. Spend wisely.

Retail Parrots
I swear everybody shops at the same store. Once a trend hits guaranteed you going viral and fast. I used to think those nickel free chunky chains where cool until I saw the whole of Cape Town wear it. What about that nerd glasses? Or the same colour lipstick. Even pose in the same way in pictures and pull their faces the same way. Everybody replicates others. So  are you a parrot?

Pelebrity’s do exist… ( people who think they are celebrities)
Now celebrities get paid to tell everybody what they wear. Rick Ross gets paid by Versace every time he mentions the brand in his tracks, so did Jay-z when he made a song called Tom Ford. It is an old marketing strategy that most pelebrities fall for, expect they don’t get paid lol. They buy these things to post them on social networks to put others in awe of them and feel like they are a celebrity.  They want to you to think that they are cooler than thou. Real celebrities get those designer items for free from top designer and the designer will get royalties when the celebrities wear them. I love to see how girls post pictures of their shopping bags, or what they wore from head to toe,  or how much they spent. I find it annoying. Can we have some originality?
